In the Eastern Alps, Maribor is a mountain town with a rich history in winemaking. For evidence, look no further than the Old Vine Building, which, as the name suggests, is lined with an old vine. A very old vine, in truth, that has been creeping along the facade of this building since the 1500s and has stems that look like venerable tree trunks. This vine is situated in the Lent area, which goes back to the Drava River and has most of the oldest monuments. The host of the European Capital of Culture 2012, Maribor is delighted with modern bars and restaurants that make Maribor the "latest" place to be. The lovely Old Town hasn't changed, and that's a good thing! Still charming as ever, a jaunt along the river really gives you a feeling for this lovely city.
